Banking officers spoke out that they were being coerced by members of the administration, that their names would be supplied to the white house press corps if they refused cooperation. The thought of national exposure and ridicule by the press should bring the officers in line.
When word of this reached the public, there was some disturbance that the administration acted in such a manner. No one said anything about the part the press corps was expected to perform. No one expected the press corps would do their own journalistic investigation. There was never any question - the press corps would run down whoever was given up to them.
That was the finality in a transition that had started before the election. The watchdogs of liberty became the hunting dogs of submission.
